Highland Presbyterian
A Wee Bit of Presbyterian History The birth of the Presbyterians in Scotland came about on August 17, 1560 when John Knox and his colleagues presented the first reformed Confession of Faith written in the English language to Scotland's parliament uniting its politics and the church. From that day on, the nation was united under a Protestant flag emblazoned with the Cross of St. Andrew. As with most all conflicts between the church and the state, after the defeat of the Scots by the English in 1746, the Scots were subjected to bans on their cultures and traditions in the hopes of subduing their rebellious spirits. However, the Highlanders' spirits kept their fervent loyalty and carried their respect for the culture, faith and traditions and maintained their heritage in going, more or less, underground to keep their clans and tartans intact. This determination and perseverance has resulted in the celebrations of the Kirkin' 'O Th' Tartan idea that is now celebrated throughout North America.
